League Rules

Spring 2012 Rule Changes & Highlights

Head Contact

Hockey Canada has implemented new rules on player safety.  This includes the new head contact rule.  A brief overview is that any accidental contact to the head will result in a minor penalty and any deliberate contact to the head will result in a 4 minute penalty.

New Faceoff Procedures

A new rule was put into place for 2012.  It reads as follows:

On all Face-Offs the ball must hit the floor before the players can make a play on the ball.  Once the ball has hit the floor the player must first play the ball with his stick without contacting his opponent.  Failure to execute a Face-off in this manner will result in encroachment being called against the oofending player and the Face-off will be repeated.

Standard Rules Outline

Superleagues follows the Official Rulebook set forth by the Canadian Ball Hockey Association (CBHA).  For new players and parents, we have provided a brief summary of our rules below:

Game Play:

  • 5 vs. 5 plus goalies (same as Ice Hockey)
  • Two 25 minute periods (run time)
  • 1 Team Timeout per game

  • Our leagues are all NON-CONTACT
  • Standard Ice Hockey rules apply, with a few additional ball hockey modifications
  • Automatic Icings are in effect
  • Offsides are in effect, and include Floating Blue Line rule (see Rules & Regulations Forums for full description)
  • Contacting the ball above the shoulders is a penalty, not just a stoppage in play

  • 3 minute Minor Penalties
